35mm Magic

Even though I’ve been shooting for many years now, part of me always felt major imposter syndrome when saying the words, “I’m a photographer.” In my mind, a “true photographer” was someone who was 1) classically trained and knew every technical aspect of photography and 2) an active explorer who carried their camera with them everywhere they went.

It took me a long time to realize that while I’m self-taught and not always jetsetting with my DSLR around my neck, I am constantly pausing to admire the world in frames... I realized that I actually was always taking photos, they were just limited to mental snapshots or my iPhone when my DSLR wasn’t with me.

I decided to be more intentional with my shots, I wanted something more than an iPhone without the liability of carrying around an expensive, heavy camera (+ the added pressure of fitting into this caricature that I made up in my head). So I started putting my small 35mm film camera in my purse on the daily and making sure to bring extra rolls when going somewhere special. Over the years, those film shots have become some of my favorite organic captures.

My go-to photo lab to process and scan my film is @thatonephotolab in Glendale 🖤 They are such a cool small business to support — not only do they do beautiful, meticulous work, but imo they are the most affordable and efficient lab in town. Ever since I stumbled upon their Instagram, I love them even more because I see how passionate they are about their clients’ work, and I love that they have cultivated a community of such insanely talented photographers across LA.

This is one of my first and favorite film shots of 2021. I’ve been really drawn to exploring culture and roots lately so trees are extra magical to me. I can’t wait to share more, but for now just pause and get lost in theses wild, beautiful, celestial branches.

Affirmation: I am growing, I am glowing 🌱🍃✨
